The Boston Choral Ensemble is a chamber choir that seeks to enrich the choral art through innovative programming, artistic excellence, and creative collaboration. BCE is dedicated to performing a wide range of repertoire with stylistic integrity, promoting new music, and educating its audience and singers.
The Boston Choral Ensemble, known as BCE, was founded in 2001 by its first music director, Tom Cunningham. A graduate of Yale University and Westminster Choir College, Cunningham was interested in creating a choir that was smart, but not stuffy—a place for people who may not have chosen music as a profession to produce high-quality music and have fun in the process. He drew a repertoire from various time periods and traditions, both sacred and secular, and was committed to sharing that variety with the community. The choir started small, with 13 members performing in its first concert series in Gordon Chapel at Old South Church in Boston during March 2002.
Since then, the Ensemble has grown to close to 40 members and, under the direction of Dr. Andrew Shenton, embarks on its 12th season with a focused aesthetic and more creative energy than ever before. Join us and support BCE as it continues to write its history as one of New England’s premier chamber choirs.

Boston Choral Ensemble is proud to work with many other organizations in the local and national arts community. Although we’re an independent non-profit organization, our relationships with other organizations are a constant reminder of everyone’s role in supporting the arts in Boston and across America.
ArtsBoston’s mission is to promote the arts throughout Boston. A member since 2006, the Boston Choral Ensemble is proud to be listed among ArtsBoston’s many member organizations including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Boston Ballet, and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project—not to mention the dozens and dozens of other choral groups in the city.

An influential group of over 1,600 choruses, individuals, and businesses, Chorus America strengthens choral organizations and provides groups like us with information, research, leadership development, professional training, and advocacy so we can deliver the best possible contributions to the Greater Boston community and to the choral art. BCE joined in 2007 and looks forward to continued involvement with our peers across America.
Gehrmans Musikförlag was founded by Carl Gehrman in 1893 and is today one of the leading music publishers in Scandinavia. It is through their generous support that the Boston Choral Ensemble will offer the first complete performance of Jennefelt’s Villarosa Sequences outside Sweden. Gehrmans’ catalogue is expansive and available on their website.
The Greater Boston Choral Consortium (GBCC)
The Greater Boston Choral Consortium—representing more than 80 choruses—promotes public awareness, understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of choral music in all segments of the Greater Boston community. BCE has been an active member of the GBCC since 2005 and enjoys staying connected to our choral friends in the local community..
Known to many all over New England, WBUR is Boston’s NPR news radio station. Founded in 1950 by Boston University, WBUR believes that responsible, in-depth, objective journalism can help people better understand issues affecting them, can assist them in making informed decisions, and can improve the world around us. Given our interest in reaching people and sharing choral music, BCE is proud to support WBUR through our volunteerism at their pledge drives. Tune in now and then to hear us mentioned!
